Performa 630cd ...... where's the CD-ROM drive?

Okay, long story short, i put together an old 630CD Performa and it booted like magic and works great.

Here's the problem, it won't see the CD-ROM drive or any SCSI drives i add.

At first, i thought it was the external drives so i removed them and still got the same problem...no matter what i put into the CD-ROM drive NOTHING comes up.

I double-checked the connections. It's got a SCSI-type "plug into" plastic and the SCSI ID (according to the back) is #1.

Any ideas?

PS - I tried the "C" after the boot sound and it won't see the CDs :(

The CD-ROM, if I recall, is SCSI on that Mac even though the hard drive is IDE.

My guess is that your SCSI controller is shot. Your best bet would be to find another 630 logic board and swap it. Also, try your drives on another Mac just to make sure.

Scott, yep, you're right, the 630, and all Macs up to the Beige G3, actually, had SCSI CD-ROM drives (apart from PowerBooks)

Anyway, have a look at the jumpers...the ID that Apple sets the drive to by default is 3, and IIRC, that can be obtained by putting jumpers over the "0", "1" and "2" pins, though I'm at a netcafe now, so I can't check any of mine, sorry.

And the drive should have Termination Power enabled, they shipped from Apple with it enabled. Speaking of which, you might want to double-check the termination of your SCSI chain.

Actually, i don't think your friend is correct. I pulled the Apple 600i drive and the externals showed up perfectly. If the SCSI controller was shot, they wouldn't be showing up and accessible.

It could be the drive by it's self, when it's gone other stuff works but i don't have another SCSI CD-ROM drive to test. I thought it might possibly be the pin outs but i pulled them all and used nothing, then systematically placed pins in and out and got no better results.

I tried IDs 1 - 3, my external drives are 4-6. I wasn't sure about the interal HD, it's actually IDE.

Either way, it works smoother with the internal CD-ROM out. I'm hunting through my old stuff for an external controller. It sucks but it means I would have a CD-ROM drive until i get another internal SCSI.

I suppose i COULD pull the CD-ROM out of my Performa 550 and try it but i just HATE pulling that plastic box apart

8-o

Just the little front plastic bezel has to come off. Insert a screw driver into the two little holes underneath and then I think you push up and pry off. The CD-ROM slides out easily.

Well Eureka and all, it actually was the CD-ROM drive. I put the other one in and...problem solved.

I guess the controller board on the drive is zapped. Odd how the door still works perfectly, even it uses a controller signal.

Oh well, thanks fellas.

If you need another, Its yours for the price of shipping. SCSI 8x, I think originally came with my 635. The only problem is that the tray has yellowed but not the face, giving it this odd two-toned look. :-/

I also have other 630 upgrade / spare parts if you are interested.
