Performa 6116CD won't boot off CD

I have a Performa 6116CD (the replacement for my dead 6100/60) that I was planning on using to write 800k floppies. However, it will not boot off the Apple Legacy Software Recovery disk or any of my other bootable disks using the classic "hold down the C key while booting" method. I checked the connections inside and there's no loose cables, so the CD should be reading the disks...is it possible my CD drive has died somehow, or is there a different way of running a bootable CD on a 61xx?

Im assuming you are, but are you holding down C before you even turn on the computer until a few seconds when it boots to the disc's desktop?

Yeah, my startup procedure has been "push C key, then push power button".

I have a spare SCSI CD-ROM drive but it's not the exact same type (300 Plus vs 300i) so I'm nervous it won't work.

Turns out the CD drive was bad, installing another CD 300i I had laying around solved all the problems.
