I have a pair of Performa/LC 550s that are in the process of being refurbished and have two questions. The status of the less-broken machine is: Mac OS 7.6.1 installed on a SCSI2SD, non-functional floppy drive, caddy-loading CD-ROM with one flimsy, half-broken caddy I'm nursing as far as I can.
First: I am trying to mount an external HP DVD-ROM drive to take the load off this poor caddy with no success so far. It's recognized by SCSIProbe (have it set to ID 2) and the drive spins and seeks a bit when I tell SCSIProbe to mount the drive, but no OS response. I'm using a CD-ROM that works in the internal 2X drive (Warcraft 1.) The stock driver for OS 7.6.1 doesn't seem to support DVD drives and isn't listed in the third-party driver hack listed here: https://www.macintoshrepository.org/articles/44-modify-apple-s-cd-dvd-drivers-to-mount-third-party-drives- Does OS 7.6.1 support DVD drives at all, and if so, what driver should I use for it?
Second: This leads me to the second issue. Files I transfer over via CD-R seem to... not work. I don't have a working Macintosh with a CD burner, and the Macintosh can't read half the files I send over via Windows 10's burning utility. SIT and SEA files just break (I did get exactly one HQX file to extract properly... into a 77KB SIT file that thought it was empty, this being the Apple CD/DVD 1.2.2 driver I tried to copy over to try out) and the SIM City folder I copied over appeared to the Macintosh as completely empty. Pre-packaged ISOs, however, work completely fine: the MacAddict Vol. 1 CD worked, Mac OS 7.6.1, a few other whole games. With a broken floppy disk drive and no in-between Macintosh, is there another way I might try to get files from one computer to the other?
