Back up the System file. Make sure you have a method to switch System folders (an external boot drive?).

No problem, I have a few partitions available, so I'll experiment on spare one.

Can’t you just use an old copy of SwitchRes to force custom resolutions?

You sir/madam are a legend! SwitchRes has indeed enabled 1024x768 resolution under 8.6. It's a bit hard on the eyes at 60Hz, but at least I have the option to get some more screen real estate when I need it. Thank you!

Glad to hear - it’s a useful utility that I used many years ago with my classic Macs.

Did you try 70Hz/75Hz and they were definitely no go?

Yes I tested all of the options, the higher refresh rates yielded a blank screen. I wonder what other resolutions will be unlocked on my other macs.

It all depends. Under 8.6, my PT Pro has no less than twenty five options just via the normal Monitors control panel, hardware and software mix.

I guess that higher refresh rates at that resolution are outside the analog board's frequency range. You could try testing it in 1Hz increments, maybe it tops out at like 62 or 63Hz in reality.

I didn't see a way to set a custom refresh rate, there were only a couple of options outside the standard range for this machine.

The old PowerMac video controllers do not have a lot of options regarding custom frequencies. Their drivers do not accept custom timings. One would have to patch the driver to accept or create custom timings.

DingusPPC emulates these:
- amic (6100/...)
- control (7500/8500/8600/...)
- sixty6 (8500/8600 composite/svideo NTSC/PAL only)
- platinum (7200)
- ATI Mach64 (anything with a PCI slot)
- Rage II / Pro (G3)

These are not emulated by DingusPPC yet:
- chips65550
- valkyrie
