My Performa 6360 has a internet by phone port that i have never used since the day i bought this mac as a used unit about 5 years ago.

Can i remove it without too much labour and damage and replace it with ... what ?

Yeah, you can replace it with an ethernet card...the only other type of card ever made for the Comms Slot. Keep in mind, you'll need a CS2 card, rather than a CS1 card due to the system's PCI architecture. Removing the modem is easy, pull the motherboard out (if you haven't done it before, it only takes a couple of seconds, remove the plastic surround that covers the expansion slots and ports, remove two screws, fold down the handle and pull the board straight out as if it were a drawer), and gently pull the modem up. The port bracket may have a tab on it that prevents you from pushing the card out of the slot when connecting a phone cable...if it does, pull the card straight up from the back gently on an angle, until you free the card completely from the slot, after which its pretty easy to work out how to finish the job.

Also, if the card was installed at the factory, there will probably be a plastic cover over the modem port (since having a CS modem installed prevents you from using the modem port), so remove that if you want to use serial devices on that port.

Thank you LCGuy for the explecite step by step instructions for me. I have only very recently mastered how to install batteries in my LC520, Performa6360, 8500, QS G4 and also memory sticks and a PCI audiophile card in the QS G4. As I get into my macs i manage not to loose or forget to install those mini machine screws. Although any i forgot to install i simple place them in a plastic bag and tape them to the mac they should go back into waiting for the next time i have to go inside unless there;s a lot of noise which means to me that i should get back in and put those screws in.

Now my task is to find card you noted i should buy/install. At this time not too sure how hard they are too find.

I hope i can come back to this post when i get the card and no doubt will be asking for more help.

Walter
