Overclocking a PB1400

I heard somewhere that the 166mhz 603e in the 1400/166 is actually a 180mhz or so module. Is this true? I wouldn't mind unlocking 20mhz for the cost of an oscillator.

 
Yes, I believe that is true for a lot of 166Mhz-equipped PB1400s. While information exists on overclocking lesser speed 603e CPUs in a PB1400 however, there is no info out there for the 166Mhz part. You could always experiment with this though, going off the link below:

... I'd love to know how to speed up mine. I was never a fan of the PC1400 due to it's sluggish speed, but did find the first release of WinAMP for Mac (called WinAMP!), let me play MP3s without skipping doing other things. Nothing else worked well enough.

That's true for changing the CPU multiplier, not for overclocking. You can overclock any model of 1400 by replacing the 33.33Mhz motherboard oscillator. It would probably be a good idea to check the CPU heatsink and replace/improve if necessary.

All the info you need is on the spec sheets for the various PPC CPUs! All that needs to be done is to lift four legs on a QFP or cut four traces on a BGA and hotwire the resistor setting combinations to achieve whatever clock multiplier you desire' date=' you could probably even hotwire the inexpensive clock setting rotary switch (?) adapter that's readily available on eBay into the circuit for experimental purposes.

There's no need to EVER search for the (well hidden on the 5300/1400/2300c) resistor arrays on PB MoBos, AFAIK. [b']Just do it[/b] . . .
