OS9 Helper Dead?

os9forever.com seems now to be a dead link. Combing through google search pages and this forum hasn't yielded any working links. Anyone happen to have a copy of 1.2.2 kicking around? TIA

Pretty sure they've always "owned" it.. that said, it's fully archived on http://archive.org, including the add-on files for 3400/2400, compatibility list, etc.

hmm.. seems 2dfx makes an interesting point, that if 1.2.2 is newest, it's not there?

can anyone confirm 1.2.2 as the latest, not 1.0.1 that's posted?

Maybe this will fix some of my instabilities?

Patches the Mac OS 9.2 installer to run on machines it was not designed to run on. When I tried this back when I had a Performa 6400, the results where terrible, the sound was always full volume and would not go through the front headphone jack. I also had memory errors. I would not recommend it unless you really need to use Mac OS 9.2 on one of those machines.

From what I understand, it only works correctly for G3 (and above) machines.

I have used it to get 9.2.2 onto a PM 8100/80, helped along with a Sonnet Crescendo 400MHz G4.

I must upload a copy of it to the Macintosh Garden...

9.2.2 will install directly on a Beige G3 or newer.

Back in the day, the argument was that even on un-upgraded Macs, 9.2.2 contained performance and stability improvements. The authors of the utility also hosted, if I remember correctly, some very late patches to Final Cut Pro 3, DVD Studio Pro, and AppleShare IP 6.x. The authors were also specifically quite unhappy with Apple for keeping the last couple patches for AppleShare IP restricted to the education market.

I've never tried 9.2.x on a non-G3, I usually just use 9.1 on my pre-G3 Macs and that's "fine" for all purposes today. This utility is from around 2004 or 2005 or so when the last of the OS 9 users were still holding on for dear life.
 

I don't know if it's still on CK's server, but if you're interested in trying, this utility is on Macintosh Garden and as such will make its way onto VTools in time.

Of similar interest are Xpostfacto for installing OSX (10.1 - 10.4/5) on some unsupported PPC machines.   And Macpostfactor for installing newer OSX (10.8 - 10.11) on older Intel hardware.
