It all depends on what apps you want to run. For decent multimedia support, 8.6 is pretty attractive (maybe 8.1 is ok), so that's what I used to run on my 6500.
I'm surprised it's so slow, have you upgraded the hard disk to a nice cheap 7200RPM model? OS 9.1 on my 6500 (128MB/40GB Seagate 7200/G3 400Mhz) runs a treat.
I do have a 20gb HD that runs at 5400RPM... Its great but I want the machine to be the fastest it can be with what I have. I wish I had more than 64mb of RAM, but boy its hard to find...
Unsupported, but in progress. The main problem is that SCSI and Ethernet are not working, which makes installation difficult. Also, will not work with Mac OS X 10.3 or later, because of 603 CPU.
With only 64MB of RAM, stay with a pre-X OS, of course. Even with lots of RAM, OS X on that machine (upgraded though it is) would likely be a frustrating experience. So, unless you absolutely need OS X to run some precious app, and can also beef up the RAM, stick with 8.something (for example).
