OS 9 Software Update Comes to Life?

I've been running OS 9 on my iMac for many months now. All that time it's been hooked up to the internet, and running more often than not, often for weeks at a time. All of a sudden today, Software Update pops up and tells me that there are new versions of things. CarbonLib, AppleScript, Firewire, something related to dvd burning... I can't remember what else.

Doesn't this seem odd?

I have to guess that's a joke I don't get?

Well, it included a firmware update with a readme file from 2001. Seems odd that it just noticed the update.

The huge potential highjacking hole in DNS protocol that the industry fixed in secret and all came out together with fixes for all their operating systems on one day, a week or so ago.

But not for pre OSX. Presumably.

Does software update run automatically by default in 9? My foggy memory says maybe not.

Maybe there's a secret black project inside Apple to bring 9 back now that PPC support is being officially phased out in X.

I was surprised recently when, following a fresh install of 9.2.1 on a Pismo, I tried the software update control panel and it actually found something on Apple's servers. I forget what. I don't recall finding anything for 9 for a VERY long time, so maybe Apple has moved or reactivated something....

However, having software update "come to life" and find something to download is one for the annals.

You got it! My secret inside sources say that Apple actually plan to release Mac OS 9.5 sometime next year, shortly after they introduce their "Retro Back-to-Platinum" campaign, in which they will be reintroducing Platinum cases, based on an updated version of the "Espresso" design theme. ;)

Did you just do a fresh install?
Nope. Been running it for many many months at least, with ethernet plugged in and working. Access to internet. etc. Not a neglected or recently resurrected box. Anyway, makes me scratch my head.

Well my OS 9 software update will ask me all few month to install Carbon Lib and other things, even though they are more then up to date.

I think it is just not really good in figuring what is installed.

It's a long time since I did a fresh install from CD of OS Z-9.1, but I still find that a fresh install of Z-9.2.1 from CD and an update to Z-9.2.2, as opposed to a cloned pre-existing installation of Z-9.2.2, will offer updates of AppleScript and (I think) iTunes after reboot. And what's more, both will download if the offer is accepted.
