Older Plus, Resistor Cut To Upgrade RAM, Newer Plus, Not So?

I was curious about this. The Plus originally said 1MB on the back and from what I am reading you had to cut a resistor in order to be able to upgrade the Plus to its maximum RAM (4 MB). In the newer models that dropped the 1MB on the back, do you still have to cut the resistor? Or since Apple was shipping them at that point with 2 MB & 4 MB installed they made a small change to how the memory is handled on the board and eliminated the need to cut the resistor? Or did they just cut them at the factory since it was just easier to stick with the same design they had been using?

Every Plus I've come across (20+) has needed a resistor cut to upgrade past 1MB, this includes "Platinum" models
