Nikon D40

Totally!

Upgraded earlier this year from a D50 (basically a very slightly older, very slightly bigger, very slightly slower, very slightly more capable at AF with older lenses version of the D40) to a D300 (basically a cheaper version of the D2Xs, with all the advantages of the D3, except 9fps and the full-frame sensor.) Congrats on the Nikon. It may not be the best dSLR ever on its own, but it's your foot in the door to a great system of cameras, with a great, complete system of accessories for just about every photographic need. (read: ways to waste your money to get marginally better results at very specific photographic situations. [:D] ]'>)

I *thought* your latest photos were looking good!

It's not my main setup, but I still have a Nikon D100 (which your D40 will handily outperform, BTW) which I use from time to time. I am considering the purchase of a D700, but I should probably wait until all the new models are announced at Photokina, and in particular, the new Leica digital SLR. But with the US $ being as weak as it is against the Euro, I'm not too optimistic.
