new SE owner

Hello everyone!,

Well it took a few years, but got my (first) SE FDHD.. it seems (seemed) to boot and could even play SimCity for a few minutes.. after which it froze and now on boot it gives an address error.

So opened it up and indeed the explosion of death inside.... but still want to revive it.. the damage doesn't seem to be that bad (except for the metal chassis above the battery)..

So I am looking for:

  • a new battery holder
  • battery
  • some capacitors (PM to Jeff sent)
  • and especially the capacity value for C10 as I cannot read what it should be..

Congrats on the SE FDHD, that is my first/primary machine as well. Having a 1.44mb drive is really awesome.

Supposedly, bad capacitors on the logic board are not really an issue on the SE. From what I've been told, that is typically only an issue on the Classic II and SE/30, as they use a surface-mount electrolytic that was more prone to failure. For what it's worth, my SE FDHD is still on it's original caps with no issues.

I really have no experience to speak into this... but an address error sounds an awful lot like a broken/rotted trace on the logic board to me. I think I'd be running around with a continuity tester testing *everything* around the battery. Just my two cents, I hope that helps somehow!

I’d give the board a full clean up with q-tips and cleaner just to make sure theres no residue left.

Potato is correct about the SEs and older macs didn't suffer the capacitor issues like the SE/30 onwards but the analogue board and psu do have those unreliable caps
