NEW Injection Molded - iMac G3 Inner Bezels

I think you still are not seeing this. If Maceffects is going out of his way to make high-quality reproductions (as he has many times before), at the cost of thousands of his and others own money, how do you expect him to make back this money selling STL files at something like $50 a pop (if even that much)? How does he stop someone from buying the file, copying it, and then distributing it? He can’t be guaranteed a return on his investment without having a monopoly on it at the start - the entire purpose of copyrights and patents that we have had for the last few hundred years. Why would he even bother putting all the time and money in if people would then just take it for little or nothing?

Secondly, he doesn’t “owe” anyone anything. If you want to spend a few thousand and then give something away for free or just a few hundred bucks, you are welcome to. He didn’t have to make any of these things or even start the project at all. In fact, he could have done the project, made fifty copies for himself, and then gave everyone else the finger (except that he did it through Kickstarter). It’s his creation, he can do whatever he likes with it. He could charge $2,000 for one bezel if he likes…though I’m sure he wouldn’t sell any.

The point is the bezels, as well as the design he made to engineer the replacement, are his. The only people he technically owes anything to are those who helped fund the project. Outside of that, he has no obligation, no matter how you “feel” about it.

I, for one, am happy he had made it and has it for a reasonable price.
I never said he owed anyone anything, and the profit on selling STLs vs the net income after expenses for injection molded goods is enormously more for maceffects if he chose to do so.
Nobody is distributing pirated paid STLs to any degree that it harms creators. this is well established as a non-issue.
Why doesn't he sell the STL like so many creators sell theirs?

Because maybe he doesn’t want to? He is the creator, and doesn’t need any further reason than that.
But he stated he wants to 'save these macs' and the kickstarter speaks of the importance of this machine. if these are genuine sentiments then the STL should be sold to help save these machines (as well as make a profit for maceffects)
Are these statements by maceffects disingenuous?

Nowadays, everybody has access to decent CAD apps. So there is no excuse for you not do the models yourself.

Paid STLs? As soon as somebody leaks them, nobody will pay for it anymore.

If you have a chance to buy injection molded parts, there is little reason to 3D-Print…

Wrong. this is not an issue for paid STL creators who sell content and make good money doing so.

At this point, it is obvious that there are some who don’t understand that they don’t have some sort of right to tell other people what to do with their work. I don’t think logic or anything else will get through that impasse.

I'm not telling anyone to do anything. I'm asking to purchase the STL so that I can print a bezel and save my imac, as maceffects purports to want to help do.

17 messages in the span of about 24 hours, straight on a new account, while making insinuations about disingenuity and greed on the part of MacEffects, does not sound like a reasonable question.
Knock it off already.

responding quickly to things makes me unreasonable? what are you talking about.
I'm passionate about retro macs, I've been collecting, restoring and 'saving them' (as maceffects says he wants to do and to help us do) for my entire adult life, and some of my childhood,
Who are you to say how quickly I'm allowed to speak on the topic?

not gonna lie, the newbie has a point. why gatekeep a part CAD if your goal is to repair machines?

I think they offer a fresh, compelling perspective on the nature of part replacements for old machines.

You can certainly make that point, and inquire Maceffects about it. I don’t agree, but we are all entitled to an opinion. There’s a difference between that, however, and basically trying to call out and pressure someone into doing something just because they want it.

I'm asking why the STL is not for sale if the goal is computing history preservation and restoration (again, as is stated)
I'm not pressuring anyone to do anything.
