Netscape 2.02 on an SE/30

Folks,

I have been able to get Netscape 2.02 up and running on my SE/30 (thank you JDW) running MacOS 7.5.5 but am having real problems with javascript error messages. I have tried to disable javascript via the program's settings but they do not seem to stick and thus with every web page that loads I have to wait for Netscape to go through its many javascript error pages. Is there something I am missing? Any advice appreciated.

I had this problem on my TAM and it drove me up the wall. I ended up using Microsoft Explorer 5 and disabled Javascript, who would have thought that Microsoft would make the best program? I tried many other browsers, including the highly recommended ones, and they all blew. I've been using it now for about 3 weeks and I can actually navigate most sites fairly well considering.

Sorry, but I don't have a solution for the JS errors. I get them too. All I can say is, when it works, Netscape 2 the absolute fastest browser available for the SE/30.

There is a 'Save Options' item under the 'Options menu that must be selected for the changes to 'stick'.

Also don't forget to install 'Netscape defrost' and if you have the memory, create a ram disk and put

Netscapes cache on it. I always use 2.02 on my classic Macs; it flies!

Out of curiosity, do you guys use an Ethernet port to connect to the Internet, or a regular modem port (i.e., dial-up)? My reason asking is because I have tried to get my Performa 5215CD running on the Internet using AOL 4.0 (we have AOL accounts at home for our other Macs, hence why I have AOL installed on the Performa). However, my problem is the connection does not last very long (sometimes, the computer will not even get past the signup window). How is it that an SE/30 can remain on the Internet, but a Performa cannot? Any ideas? (Before I forget, I am running OS 8.1 & have a Global 28k modem built-in).

If I need to move this post, or start a new thread, let me know. I do not want to get bashed for something so insignificant.

I have a MacCon Ethernet PDS card that I use to get my SE/30 on the net and connected with modern Macs, via Ethernet hub.

Good to hear from you again JDW.

How long does the connection last? An hour? As long as you remain online? I'm lucky if I get 15 minutes of Internet time before the connection is lost on my Performa.

I've never had a problem maintaining my Ethernet connection, neither to the internet nor to other Macs. I just have compatibility problems with Netscape 2 because it is quite old and most modern sites play best with the newest browsers. I wouldn't be surprised about getting dropped connections via dial-up. But if you are getting connection problems over Ethernet, perhaps it's time to check the Ethernet hub you are using. Try connecting only the SE/30's Ethernet cable direct to your internet modem, disconnecting ever other Ethernet device. If it works in that condition, it could be the hub. My hub is 10/100 base-T and I've never had a problem with it, but I've heard others complain about their 10/100 Ethernet hubs in these forums, claiming incompatibilities. Not such what the root cause behind that is though.

I connect to the internet with an Asanté EN/SC adapter that in turn attaches to an ethernet hub which connects wirelessly via internet sharing through my Powerbook G3 Pismo to my home network. It is pretty stable.

Yea, Netscape 2 was the first browser supporting JavaScript. As such, it only supports the so-called "DOM level 0", which is inadequate for modern Javascript. It do not support includes via
