Netatalk and System 6

equant

I have Netatalk running on a linux box in order to share files with my macintosh somputers. With a box running system 9.1 I can enter the linux box's IP in chooser and access the share. Smooth.

However, under system 6, I can't access the netatalk share. Anyone know how to get netatalk running with system 6? I see stuff about zones or nodes or pigmies, but it's not clear to me what to do.

Thanks,

Nathan

Appletalk went through several versions over the years. It is possible that netatalk isn't compatible with the older version used by Sys 6. Beyond knowing that I haven't much expertise to lend you. Sorry.

I've found threads on the netatalk mailing list that lead me to believe it can work with system 6. Beyond that, yeah, you could be right, maybe it doesn't. I didn't find any howto or real clue about what needs to be done.

If you need to enter the IP in the chooser, then you're using AppleShare over TCP/IP, instead of over AppleTalk, where the names of available servers would be listed automatically in the chooser.

AppleShare over TCP/IP is only supported in Mac OS 8.5 or better.

I haven't tried it myself, but there's a linux kernel driver for AppleTalk networking, and if you have it, netatalk will support AppleTalk networking, so it should appear in choosers.

I seem to recall that System 6 machines required an updated Appletalk version to mount a share running on Apple Unix (A/UX). Appleshare Pro in particular, which ran on A/UX 3, looked from the outside like classic Appletalk, but in fact devolved all networking to the underlying TCP/IP networking system.

I have no experience of netatalk, but it occurs to me that it might be modelled loosely on the sort of Appletalk filesharing available in, with or under A/UX. One place to start might be to have a look for that Appletalk software update for System 6 and see if it maybe solves the problem.

It was distributed with Appleshare Pro, not with A/UX.

To my last posting I might add that Appleshare over IP can be done, so that, e.g., you can enter the IP address in the Chooser and connect to a remote machine, but that this requires a later OS than 6.

I can, for instance, connect from a Quadra running 7.6.1 to my X.4 iMac, but THAT required an update from the stock installation that came with 7.6.1 to Appleshare 3.8.3 on the Quadra.

If what you need to do in System 6 is enter an IP address in the chooser and connect, you are basically sunk.

There is, however, the "Apple IP Gateway" that you could look into. It might allow you to do what you want.
