Need some help with imac G5's

A local guy I know ends up with old machines that people drop off. I went to pick up an old Compaq 486 tower and he had some iMac G5's. So I said what the hell and snagged a couple machines for a few bucks. One is an A1076 (20") and the other is an A1058 (17"). Both machines show signs of bad caps.

What I want to know is I put RAM in the 17" and it bonged but nothing showed up on the screen (dark/dead). Is that just a symptom of bad capacitors or is there something else wrong with the unit?

The LCDs on 17"' iMac and early Intels are known to be flaky, but I'd do the usual CUDA reset, try more RAM and check if the backlighting works by shining a torch on the screen to see if a flashing ? is present

I would assume a propane torch is not needed. I should get a video out cable and see if there is output as it is now.

caps caps caps, then lcd can have issues but if the screen is totally out its usually caps.

Finally recapped the 17" unit, works fine. Ordered parts for the 20".

Any idea how to get rid of LCD scratches?

How deep are the scratches?  Assume you will need to use some sort of abrasive to remove them - for minor scratches something like a plastic cleaner for headlights might to (Meguiar's PlasticX), for deeper car cut and polish.  Obviously it'll never get back to normal, but you can remove most of the scratch to make it unnoticeable when the computer display is actually on.

I will look into those. My 20" imac g5 just got recapped and it has scratches as well. For Imacs a working motherboard seems harder to find then a good screen.

If not, the only thing you can do is purchase new polerizer film, peel the old off using a little bit of heat, clean up the adhesive, and re-apply new with applicator fluid, as if you were doing window tint. You can purchase the new film, both in matte or gloss...
