Mystery SE/30 Ethernet Card

Hi everyone,

The SE/30 I acquired last month came with an ethernet card installed.  I'm not sure which one it is, or which drivers I need for it.  Any help identifying it would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, your choice, Classic Networking, or Open Transport.

I ended up going with MacTCP 2.06 -> 2.1.  Supposedly Open Transport is a little more resource intensive, but does support DHCP properly.  MacTCP requires the client user to manually declare the IP address if using DHCP on the router.  I set the IP address on my Mac SE/30 to be reserved on my router since I manually assigned it.

Seems to be set properly, but I really have no way of telling at the moment.

Tomorrow I will continue along with setting up some FTP software to make it easy to load new software directly from my MacBook.  I'll know for sure at that time that the ethernet card is working 100%.

Much alike the one that came with my "new" SE/30

I haven't got it working since the SE/30 came as non-working and I'm just starting the recovery/recaping process.

Will I need a driver for this card?

Goncalo, since it isn't Apple branded you will almost definitely need need drivers.

I was able to get my ethernet card working using MacTCP in System 7.1.  My SE/30 has 8mb of ram so I went ahead and loaded on NetPresenz to give it a test run acting as an FTP server.  I was then able to push files downloaded from the garden directly to the SE/30       I also installed fetch, but newer versions of OS X make it such a hassle to enable FTP that it is literally easier to just enable it on the vintage Mac and use FileZilla on the MacBook to push the files over.

Performance is definitely slower that my CC w/ 575 board and PDS ethernet card.  That machine can moved data at around 140kb/s, this SE/30 moves data between 10 and 40 kb/s.  Once I order more RAM (going to set it up with 32mb eventually), I'll give Open Transport a try to see if that improves performance.  That said, even if it averages 20kb/s speed, it still only took just over 2 minutes to move one 1.4mb floppy .img file.  Definitely serviceable.
