My FREE MO Media Conquest

A very nice person who works for Canon sent me a Canon Diskfile 502m magneto optical disk for free. Shown in this photo:

I believe this might be useful for those who own a NeXT Cube with a working MO drive. It's reported to work but is double-sided as opposed to the single-sided NeXT MO media. If anyone here can confirm, I would appreciate a reply. I'm still awaiting parts for my Cube to see if my MO works and still trying to get into the NeXT computer forums :( I have been following the MO repair thread over there. There is some great progress to bring these drives back to life.

As far as I know, from having worked with those types of drives extensively back in grad school, it should work no trouble, you just lose 1/2 the capacity since it can only operate on one side

Here's what they look like side-by-side.

I've not been able t locate a picture of them together nor have I seen a picture of the Canon media outside of the case so this may be of interest to someone.

Do the Next MO drives support flip disk? If so, all you will need to do it flip it over and you can access the other side.

Nice score!

Yeah, the nextcomputers.org forum administrators seem to have disappeared, I doubt that will change anytime soon :-/

Isn't the MO drive on NeXTcubes 256MB, though?

Edit: Double-sided, okay…

Apple MO drive? Never heard of that before…

I think the double-sided Canon media even got flipped in the Canofile (what it was made for) because the thin label is flipped for either side.

NeXT's cartridges are identical to the Canon because it's the same thing but with one less writeable surface. The drives are also identical so nothing prevents you on a NeXT from writing to one side, flipping the cartridge over and then using the other side.

Most of the 5.25" MO drives worked liked this. 3.5" and MiniDisc does not.

You need to poke around my Photobucket more. ;)

Your PhotoBucket is awesome. I now have a new found respect for your collecting ability :) I wish Google would index images like those so they could be found.

Thanks for sharing. When I get some more time, I'll be going through the whole gallery.

I have a Fujitsu 2.3GB MO drive that supposedly supports double-sided media. Never ran into one, though. A 3.5" 4.6GB DSMO disk would be awesome. :)
