Hello, Everyone.

I’ve recently been playing around with the community builds of Snow Leopard for Power PC and mentioned to a friend that I wished there was a way I could help that project, or really any Power PC project as I just love the early Mac OS X/Late Mac OS 9 eras.

A friend mentioned that although I might not be of any use when it comes to coding, I do have a variety of old Mac’s that all function and perhaps someone would like software tested over a few different machines.

Currently I have the following:

2X PowerMac G5, a dual 1.8Ghz 2003 and late 2005 dual 2.3Ghz model.
PowerMac G4 Quicksilver dual 1Ghz
PowerMac G4 Sawtooth 500Mhz
iBook G3 Snow 900Mhz
iBook G4 1.33Ghz
PowerBook G4 Titanium 400mhz
PowerBook G4 Titanium 1Ghz
PowerBook G4 12” 1.5Ghz

Nice of you to offer. It can be difficult to get testers for projects.

You might need to hang around and see if anyone is running a project you are interested in though as people might not remember and you might need to offer when you see something. Good chance to get to know people and what projects are on the go.

Have you considered picking up learning to program yourself though? It is a good puzzle / brain exercise. You might consider something like grabbing an old copy of "RealBasic" for one of your PowerPCs - it is fairly easy to learn and you can do some good work with it, even if some people might say it isn't "real" programming (its fun and easy, I use it so :p to them).

One thing that is sort of knocking around at the moment, although not specifically here, is that it is now possible to install older system versions like 7.6.1 or even older (although less reliably) on G3s and G4s. It might be interesting to document what the various issues / shortcomings and compatibility issues are on different machines - for example sound doesn't work on most machines at the moment.
