MS Works

I have MS Works 2.0 on my Classic II, and I've been using it for some time now. It's a great little app, and I have created many documents with it. Since I started using Linux on my Classic II though, I've noticed an issue. It keeps crashing whenever I try and open a document. I think I discovered that the issue is 32-bit addressing.

Linux requires the machine to be in 32-bit mode to boot. MS Works appears to dislike 32-bit addressing to the point of crashing. Is there any way to get MS Works to loosen up a bit on the whole 32-bit thing? Or do I just need to keep changing the addressing mode and rebooting depending on which app/OS I wish to run?

What is the letter in the version you are using? MS Works 2 will say "2.00b" for example when you start it up.

I remember reading in a Charles Rubin book many years ago that you should stick with 2.00c or 2.00d. I've got 2.00d and have noticed no problems whatsoever, but I've never used 2.00 on a Classic II, just 3.0.

Find out what you have and let me know.

It's 2.00d. This is rather interesting.

So is it crashing while you are in Linux?
Nope. It crashes when I have 32-bit addressing turned on. The only real reason that I have to turn that on is to run Linux. When 32-bit addressing is off, MS Works runs fine but Linux won't boot.

Bad Microsoft, they've been secretly blockading the Open Source movement for years!

:p

I'll have to pull one of my newer Macs out of the closet and try 32 bit addressing with Works 2.0d. For some reason I think I used to run this configuration on my LC without a problem but I'm not positive.

My Classic II currently needs a new analog board so I can't test on it...but I'll try an LC II sometime this week.

Hokay, cool :)

I have Works 2.00e. It quits with a Type 1 error every time you use any of the modules besides spreadsheet when you have 32-bit addressing on.
