Mozilla and iTunes questions

I'm wondering, why do all builds of Mozilla run verrrryyy slowly on earlier PPC like the 601 or 603? I have tested it on my 6200 75mhz and omg so slow. On my 6500 that has a 300mhz 603 with my G3 card disabled, it also runs terribly slow. I only find it to be bearable with a G3 or higher... why is this? By the way both machines I tested it on have OS 9.1.

Now, about iTunes, where can I find a copy of the first version (1.0?) ???

Mozilla: 'Tis one of the great mysteries of the universe. I have no idea, but it really does suck :\

iTunes: If you're looking for a version to use with OS 9, why not go for 2? That can be found here. I can't seem to find iTunes 1 anywhere for download though.

Mozilla runs fine on PowerMacs in Linux or *BSD. Mozilla also runs fine PowerMacs on in Mac OS X. There's only one version of Mozilla for Classic Mac OS that I know of... WAMCOM or whatever it's called. It's slow, but it still works better than most of the competition for the Classic Mac OS. At least that's been my experience. Although I've been using IE 5.1 lately.

honestly its because Mozilla was never really optimized for classic MacOS, and the result is, as you found out, it runs horribly.

also, the 6200 will be extremely slow on the internet no matter what browser you use, its a horribly engineered machine.

i know if you have the available ram you can adjust up the max memory partition. which will give you a little bit of a speedup. you can also install flash player and shockwave and a few other things to get to play somewhat correctly online.

other than iCab, wamcom mozilla 1.3.1 is the best you can get for a web browser for Mac OS 9.x. i also think you can download the source code so you can compile it if you want to.

Cache, cache, cache, cache, cache.

Mozilla likes L2 cache. It runs acceptibly well on my 2400c, 3400c, and 6500 which all have 603e processors between 200 MHz and 300 MHz and all have cache.

I use Mozilla 1.0.2 (Yes. That old. 1.0.7/1.0.9 spent more time on their faces than upright.) on:

PB1400c/G3/400MHz/64MB OS8.6, with 5MB RAM Disk as cache

5500/G3/400MHz/128MB OS9.1, with 5MB RAM Disk as cache

9600/G3/500MHz/512MB OS9.2.2, with 5MB RAM Disk as cache

Beige G3/400MHz/768MB OS9.2.2, with 5MB RAM Disk as cache,

just as examples. As alk mentions, none of those processors was harmed during the making of this post by having 1MB of L2 cache, either.

Mozilla is perfectly adequate for downloads, Web searching and forum participation, especially if you double its RAM allocation in Get Info. Of course it bogs down with many sites and graphics/sound-heavy renders. Amazing, that, since it wasn't written to cope with such stuff. It has a perfectly adequate email client inbuilt. As 'legacy' browsers go it has no reason to hang its head. I've used my PB1400 on the road and with dial-up instead of ADSL to bid and win on eBay. It needs the addition of 5sec reaction time to win, but win it can.

Indeed, at least three of the above processors were not even used in the making of the post. [] ]'>

I've used Mozilla on a much less capable (300MHz OC'd 233MHz G3, 160 MB of RAM, 512KB L2 Cache, Mac OS 86) Beige G3, and it performed rather flawlessly. Good quick screen renders, remarkably decent multimedia support with its rather dated plugins and Quicktime, and probably the fastest file downloads of all the browsers I've used in Classic Mac OS. And I've used most of them -- Opera, iCab, IE, WamCom (Mozilla), Navigator, Communicator, WannaBe...

My one dislike of Mozilla on PPC Mac OS: It has, by far, the longest boot time. That's why I generally just use IE most of the time. It just boots a hell of a lot faster.
