Me Mum found it: Daystar Turbo601 and Radius Videovision!

Hi,

Here's a rather amusing story that just goes to show you don't need to have any knowledge of computers and yet still get a top score!

My Mum was walking to the shops, and found a file of random PC parts dumped on the side of the road. She was carrying shopping but grabbed "two cards in the nice silvery bags that I know means they're new", and took them home. She described the cards to me on the phone as such; I half expected a 256K VGA ISA card or Sound Blaster 16.

Not so! I turned up for lunch today and smiled:

- Radius Turbo601 66Mhz (not sure for what - believe most were for IIci? Which I don't have - but tempted to try in my SE/30, IIfx - maybe)

- Radius Videovision NUBUS card with memory expansion board (840AV here we come!)

We went back to the spot, but it was just boxes - she said there wasn't anything else there of interest. No breakout box for the Videovision unfortunately.

So, what have your parents/significant others found for you? :)

Your mom has a good eye to notice something like that just sitting around.

The only thing either of my parents ever brought home that was remotely interesting from an IT perspective was an old, abandoned PowerMac. My dad found it sitting on the curb when he took the dog for a walk. I got it up and running again and donated it to one of my friends that didn't have a computer. He was thrilled.

My Dad found an iMac G3 in the trash and nabbed it for my one time. I fixed that up and gave it to my Aunt. he also found an iMac G3 at an auction, and almost got it for $8, but someone bid against him, and he wound up buying it for $25. (This is very funny to me because i have 5 others in states of disrepair that he can't wait for me to get rid of.) My uncle nabbed a Cinema Display (CRT, ADC) for $10, and I think I'm gonna get that sometime this week, but I have no idea what to do with it.

Finding a Videovision card on the side of the road would be about as likely as hitting the lottery around here. Once in a long while you will find an old gutted PC case or monitor out on trash day. Most stuff gets recycled or reused/given away and is PC based.

If you can wait like 3 or 4 weeks, as I'm uncovering more of what's in my basement and our spare room as we clean out the house. I MIGHT still have my extra Nubus breakout "stick" for that VideoVision card you have. They are actually very nice cards and the conversion is about as close to an early AVID as I have been able to see. The VideoVision Telecast units however are actually still my favorite even over older Avid Systems. That's mainly because they didn't cripple their hardware and software with stupid license files, dongles, or firmware matching code. :)

PM me if you are interested and can wait that long.... MacTreeHouse on Ebay actually should have one as well for like 10 bucks. VERY good guy and sold me much of my old Radius gear years ago.

Good luck

I always think it is rather sweet (cosy and homely sweet) when your mother brings you something back of which she has no idea and turns out to be a gem. But afterall there has to be that wire from birth connected, a single point where both minds connect.
