Macintosh Plus times two, Powerbook 100 + other stuff

Cosmo

Bought originally the Powerbook online, but the guy started talking and offered "some other vintage mac stuff" for me as well, so ended up buying them all. Had to ship them but after all it wasn't too expensive. He even gave never been used Yashica MSX computer there too, that goes to colleque who collects these things. The macintoshes were saved from being thrown in garbage from some country side school originally.

PowerBook 100

- Apple HDI-20 external 3.5" drive

- Powersupply

- Boots up to black screen, reset doesn't help, sounds like the HD won't spin. Dead battery atleast.

Macintosh Plus

- Original keyboard (had to clean up, had colorfull stickers on 1/3 of the keys!), original mouse.

- Haven't booted up yet. This should be the better unit.

Macintosh Plus (dirty)

- No keyboard, no mouse, no battery, writing all over.. (see pictures)

- Might not boot up. Looks like spareparts machine.

Apple external 3.5" drive (A9M0106)

Apple SC20 external SCSI HD

Cutting Edge external SCSI HD

- Driver disks, terminators, replacement fan (!)

Logitec ScanMan handscanner & connecting box

Localtalk boxes 3 pcs

Localtalk cables 3 pcs

External keyboard (very clean)

ADB Mouse 2 pcs

Cables, SCSI etc.

PB100 seems to boot with using external keyboard, but installing System 7 fails due it can't find the HD. Seems to be spinning however.

So option could be booting up on SCSI mode and checking the disk health.

Keep us posted, PB 100 is a sweet find.

And you can never have too many compacts, I've been wanting to make a living room set (couch, chairs, etc) out of stacked compacts ever since I saw the Tekserve booth at Macworld Expo 2000, I believe it was. Complete with Lisa foot rest. 8-)

I'll try tonight with fried's PB100 the SCSI target mode trick to see if the HD is dead or not. Finding 2.5" SCSI drive isn't easy nor cheap i think.

Odd that the machine boots using external keyboard but not using the power button on machine itself, it's giving only black screen (bit light on corners, as descb. elsewhere in 68kmla.org before).

Compacts.. yes i love them! Already have 3 Classics (one dead), two Pluses and tonight i'll pickup 512k/800 (M0001D) and within' few weeks should get one SE and Classic. Next in line to find would be SE/30 and Color Classic/II on compact side.. the "dead" or this recently required "dirty" Plus needs to go basement, i am running out of space on my shelf! I'll keep one each model in use/display. The SE/30 and Color Classic/II is bugging my mind, i really want those!

Booted the machine with Norton recovery 2.0 (forgot the title, disc wasn't mine) but it did not find the HD. Looks like dead HD. When booting the machine after PRAM-reset the HD spins, clicks, clicks again clicks, again. Not a good sign as everyone knows.

Need to open the machine and see if there's any leaks. The PRAM batteries had full charge. Too bad, this was really clean nice unit. Need to start looking for the 2.5" SCSI HD..

 Don't forget the fireplace!

My son helped Dick design & build the MacLivingRoom Booth Display as part of his job there that summer! [;)] ]'>

Never too many compacts!

I am itching to get SE/30 now!

Oh no, that picture certainly wasn't from my collection  the theme just fitted the discussion. I'm only at 6 pcs at the moment, waiting for two more. Then would have 512k/800, Plus, Classic and SE, other's are spare. Need to focus on getting SE/30 and CC and/or CCII. Those CC's are really difficult to find in Finland and looks like they're rare in Europe too. I'll post tonight few pics of the yesterday's conquest, clean 512k/800 (M0001D) with SCSI modification (original).

Amen to that! That's a pic of Tekserve's entranceway and those are almost certainly the MacLivingRoom Booth components.

I wonder what it looks like now that they've completely remodeled the joint? :?:

edit: looks like I'll have to wait until I get to the BBadRottenA again to see, I won't load Flash even to see the rest of the pics in their slide show.

Powered up both of the Plus's tonight.

Both are M0001AP

-"The bad one", has some issues with power/display, boots forever from disk, might be just bad drive. Has the Programmer's Switch on it. The drive almost ate my 4.1 disk! Might be repairable as well if replace the drive would work just nice.

-The better one, boots up QUICK. Forgot to insert the disk inside, so my amazement it just loaded up 6.0.7! So the unit actually does have an internal HD on it! I haven't yet opened up it, but this was surely nice suprise. No programmer's Switch. I'll post pictures when i have time to open it up.

The Apple SC20 external SCSI drive works fine, but the Cutting Edge external SCSI drive does not. Powers up and the disk spins, might be just me, or bad terminator etc. Same ID used on both, ID 5, wich should be free. Luckily the Cutting Edge drive came with tools disks with it can play around with it later.

It's nice to see a Finnish System, quite unusual for me.

I was just wondering how many Compacts were sold abroad, and how many survived :)

A couple of years ago, i came across a dozen of Macs, just put together in a warehouse... i just asked if i can have one for free, and get a "you can test all of them, and take the one you want" in reply :beige:

That is the way i collected my SE, don't know what happened with the rest !

I can only dream of such finds i guess. I've heard lately lots of stories how this-and-that company have trashed several pallets of vintage apple's and macintoshes... makes me cry really. Who knows what's the reality on those stories (i don't doubt the source however but..) like the one where they trashed 5-6 Apple Lisa's them being too old. I've heard about these just too late.

Bit off topic, a friend just told how that his school (wich he attented when he was younger) trashed "recently" tons of Apple II and compact macs... they trash them and i don't even have ONE Apple II > :( As he's vintage homecomputer (Commodore, MSX etc) hobbyist, i told him if hears about vintage macs thrown away, seems them for grabs, he should tell me first heh. I gave them the mint-condition (never been powered up) Kyocera Yashica MSX-computer and two Sinclair Spectrum XL+:s, one really good another for parts, as i have no use for them.

Anyway, will try tonight open up the Plus with HD inside. I've seen pictures of this at Mac GUI. That unit had the "FI" approved logo (Finnish) and it was M0001AP, but mine doesn't have that strange SCSI-port adapter.

This one:

Another thought, who knows, the Plus with HD might be case-swapping project, who knows, inside might be an Classic?

Need to open this tonight! Can't wait!

I have not forgotten the fireplace! Just didn't want to mention a scorched compact around the MLA. They got guns, y'know... The Mac TV playing the fire video was a sweet touch too. Your son did good work!

I haven't been in Tekserve for years, but I browsed their online tour just now and one picture was of the Compact Counter (with one IIsi trying to blend in). Looks like they've got shelves of old radios and phones too. I don't think I remember that being there before. Looks like they've still got the "now serving" Mac Pluses up on the wall. I always thought that was a cool touch.

Man, if looking at the slideshow makes me wish I had every Apple in there. My apartment would be awesome. I'd have MacBook Pros on every table and counter in the place. It'd be AWESOME. ;D

I need to take a trip to visit my Mac Stash and see what I can do, along with grabbing my other desk from my Dad's barn. Then I can have a u-shaped setup of three: New, writing/paperwork, and retro.

Moving back onto topic, I thought it was really cool seeing the Finnish screenshot of System 6 as well!
