A 10mbit hub is a very useful thing to have around for connecting old computers with. That looks like a reasonable price to me, too, so yeah, that might be a good plan.
gee, yesss! It works. I have my Mac II connected to the 3COM switch, which is connected to my netgear and in turn to my internet provider router.
I can access my local FTP server
DNS works I can ping nodes over the internet.

Hotline is my recommendation for an original Mac file downloading experience! I actually just got my PowerMac 7100 on Hotline again last night, after having similar issues as you. There are a few Hotline servers still serving Mac files for download.
