... I had one from that year. What's so special about it? Yes... it existed, but I had one that was EARLIER Than that, that I got several years ago. Sold it only for $200, but I never listed it as "Rare" I listed it as "Original Macintosh (Pre-128k Markings)" and it sold to someone that worked at a PDA Company in Japan. The shipping on that thing came out to MORE than the guy paid for the system. And that was without keyboard/mouse/floppy/extra.
Looks like a standard production model to me. I'd say its one of the very first ones. The Macintosh was introduced on January 24th, 1984, so you can imagine that they would have already started filling up the supply channel a couple of months in advance after they got the design right so that they can satisfy demand.
For the record, I'm fairly sure that all 128's were built in Fremont, I'm fairly sure mine was - I'll have to check.
I'm pretty sure too that all 128Ks were made at Fremont -- it was a new production line dedicated to Mac manufacture, and it is unlikely that the sales volume required another one. I just checked a European spec 128K and it ws made at Fremont.
I think that $200 is a fair price for that one, but I'm basing that on UK/European rarity. The 512KB RAM upgrade looks very nice, and with the 800KB floppy drive, it makes a very usable system.

Agreed about the upgrade. However, along with the 800K FDD it diminishes the value of the unit as a 128K collectable which is why I raised an objection on the Outrageous eBay prices thread. I also take huge exception with this outrageous statement:
"Because of its special marking and an early production date, this maybe the only 1983 born Mac left for the serious collector."
