It arrived today! Very good condition. Only 2MB of RAM, so I'll have to max that out. Still, pretty zippy for only 2MB. The hard drive is 25MB, so that's pretty good. Should be plenty of space for this little guy.

Probably the only real mar on the case is that little tab breaking.

I just hooked it up and it booted right up! I think this was a kid's computer, because there's Mother Goose and Reader Rabbit software installed, and there's a bunch of empty folders on the hard drive with names like "lkwkljwjklscvvvbcfgfgfgoiuhhhh" and "asdsouiiofjdklskjldfs".

I haven't tried using the floppy drive yet. I'm going to unbox The Oregon Trail tomorrow and try that out. In the meantime, I think I need to see if I can figure out why it's not getting any sound. There was no startup chime, and when I tried changing the system volume in the Control Panel I got nothing. I booted up to the ROM, even, so that should rule out a driver issue.

So looking through the forums it sounds like I need to recap the logic board. This'll be my first. I'll post about it on the Compact forum.

Also the analog board. I had my classic II board recapped and put it in my classic as it had sound and the board created no sound with the classic analog board. The speaker is wired into the analog board on the classic and II.

Yeah, I think while I'm recapping, I should probably replace them all to be on the safe side. The caps are all over 22 and a half years old, after all.

No, I'm going to have to find the additional memory board and some SIMMs and max it out. I'll probably do that in January.

I have memory boards I'll try and dig them up. Had a stack of maxed out and ones needing Simms. If I can find them I'll let you know.

If I recall, the Classic has 1MB on the logic board, and to add anything to that you need the expansion board which has another 1MB soldered on, and can accept 2x 1MB SIMMs. So necessarily, if you have 2MB you have the expansion board I do believe!

Well that would be awesome! I have to wait until this weekend to pick up a long Torx screwdriver, so I haven't seen what's on the inside yet.

I don't know if your in the US, but I know that Sears carries a long Craftsman T15 screw driver perfect for case crackin'. Its about $6-$7 plus tax.

Does a 68000 based Mac really need more than 2mb? All of my Pluses and SE's only have 1mb and run everything I throw at them.

Those Macs don't use virtual memory, so adding more RAM won't make them any faster. The only benefit of extra RAM is that you can run more programs at the same time under MultiFinder.

My plus is modified for 4 meg of ram and it just allows higher system software and such. I put 7.5 on my plus with external hard disk and let my father in law use it to get on AOL for years with dial up. Modified geoport modem pulling power from keyboard plug.
