Mac SE For a Mac Plus

Would trading a working, with peripherals Mac Plus for an SE or SE/30 be a fair trade? The computer has its peripherals, 4MB of ram, and a relubricated floppy drive. The se or se/30 would be working, with an ADB Keyboard and mouse.

Plus for SE is a pretty fair trade. Plus keyboard is a little bit more valuable than an SE keyboard. A working SE/30 is worth at least twice as much as a Plus though.

Depends on condition. Also, I myself would not trade an SE FDHD for a Plus, but a dual 800k SE I would. But if someone has a spare SE and really wants a Plus, its up to them of course. I agree that trading an SE/30 for a Plus is pushing it. Again, relative condition.

The reason I ask about the SE FDHD is because I am trying not to accumulate more computers, and I can't make 800k disks.

The Plus has an 800k drive. Just get a hard drive for it to boot from and make floppies from, no?

I have no way of getting other programs on to it. I want an SE FDHD because I can use my USB floppy drive to make disks for it.

Buy a SCSI Zip100 Drive to hook up to the Plus (and any later Macs in your collection) and the USB variety (Zip250 would be ideal) for your modern machine. You can probably get the both of those for about the price of shipping a Compact and Zip would be at least 10x as useful overall.

But I would like an SE better, because I would like the internal hard drive and PDS support.

I like Trash's idea. There's not really anything useful to put in the PDS slot of an SE. The Zip will make a fine "hard disk" for the Plus. You'll be able to copy the files over in one go instead of several times back and forth with floppies.

Or SCSI2SD. I have never been a fan of Zip ever since the first one I had started eating disks in 2000. Too finicky.

Not to me if you want a working internal hard drive. Miniscribes die almost always and that is what is in an SE. So that would mean a replacement working drive. To me, a working SCSI drive on its own is of equal value to a Plus.

You could always put a SCSI2SD inside the SE. I don't think there's any way to put one in a Plus.

That depends on your definition of "put one in a Plus". You could hypothetically solder a ribbon cable onto the points used for the DB25 on the back panel...

What would power it though? Doesn't it need a Molex?

Sure. Lop a molex off of a junk PSU and solder it to a +5 point on the AB. The extra power draw of the SCSI2SD is negligible, especially compared to hard disks from the day.

Speaking of that, does a dual floppy SE have a connector already I can use for a SCSI2SD or do I have to hack one in?
