Mac Classic issue with MacTerminal

I have been using my old Mac Classic with a modem for months and all has been well. Today I went in and turned the computer and modem on and I get a message that pops up "The modem port appears to be in use, so MacTerminal is using the printer port" this all came out of the blue. I've disconnected the modem and shutdown/restarted the MAC, when I launch MacTerminal, with nothing even attached to the MAC, I get the same message.
Any ideas???
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

But there are two serial ports. AppleTalk usually uses the printer port. So the modem port should be free.

What port is selected for AppleTalk?

Of course, if you don't have an AppleTalk network, then AppleTalk should be turned off.
