Mac Classic II Recap

My next project is my Classic II which of course needs a recap.

I'm deciding whether to recap myself or send it off. I'd like to see your opinions on some stuff!

1. Would you recommend a beginner like me to just use tin cans instead of tants?

2. I've seen many different ways of removing them. What is the SAFEST way?

3. If I posted a picture, would you be able to tell me if it's a board that will most likely work when recapped? There was no goo on it really...

1. SMD Tants aren't too hard, there is some advice around here on how to solder them, as well as many tutorials on the Internet. The Biggest thing to remember is the polarity.

2. Hot air those old SMD caps off. By far the safest way.

Ok. I've got a hot air station but some of those caps are close to other things... what, just put on the smallest tip and circle around the cap?

That would work. If you don't already have polyimide tape, get some--two layers of that stuff makes a very effective heatshield.
