Currently non functioning, but all the major parts seem to work. Some problem with the flow of electricity. Anyway, it came with a comm slot ethernet card, which I needed for another machine, so even if I never manage to get it fixed I saved some money not having to buy that and got lots of spare parts into the bargain.

Not to be sneezed at. As a three-digit 68K Mac it was a perfectly competent performer (no pun intended) in its time. It can be upgraded with a 60x board, but it is always let down by its video, and especially by the non-Trinitron RGB display. With ATA HDD and a built-in CD-ROM it showed the way of things to come.

Wait...I've researched the 575/580 video debate. Yes, the 575 has a better monitor, but doesn't the 580 have faster VRAM? I believe the 575's dedicated VRAM runs at 70ns while the 580's shared VRAM runs at 60ns.

the 578 was the last of the 5xx series, the 580 is a rehoused 630- even supports the full range of expansion options. Unless you're interested in a MAJOR undertaking, converting the 580 to trinitron looks to be near impossile as the analog board is unique to it, as is the new harness assembly to accommodate the 630 card edge. In addition, the front case has the 2-dimensional curve for the shadow-mask crt, so this would have to be changed, but the 5xx series faceplate doesn't have the right lockign tabs to accommodate the 580's chassis assembly.
