Laylow's Acquisitions

Hey everyone,

I grew up using Macs, with my first being a Plus.  In my adult life, I babysit a few hundred Windows desktops and servers, and I've had this itch lately to get some old Macs for fun.

So, last week I picked up an iMac DV SE 400 on Craigslist for $35.  It was running 10.4.11, but I wiped it, and now it's a pure OS 9 machine.  I've got it setup on my desk for playing old games, IRC, and maybe some audio recording.   I'm going to see if I can record and produce my podcast entirely in OS 9 one week, just for fun.

Last night I drove an hour to get an iBook G4.  It was $50, and is a 14 inch 1.42GHz, with 1.5 GB RAM, 128GB SSD, new keyboard, new battery, new power supply.  I'm writing this post from it.

Next week when I'm in San Diego I'll pick up my dad's old liquid cooled quad G5 from my mom's house.

These should keep me busy for a while.

Welcome to the 68kmla, laylow! You don't seem to have any 68k Macs at the moment, but don't worry, at the pace you're going you'll probably have one in your hands very soon  :p

Those are great finds! Especially that iBook G4. I didn't know you could get one of these with those kind of specs for this cheap. Now I want one.

I have the same iMac G3 config at home. Mine runs quite hot and after approximately 30 minutes playing games, it starts displaying some video artefacts. I'm probably going to add a small fan or better heatsink on the graphics chip.

And I also have a Quad G5 I picked up a few months ago for the ridiculous sum of 10 bucks. Don't worry too much if it doesn't start right up and shows an overheating error. As you mentioned these things have Liquid Cooling systems and they do fail a lot. You'll have to replace the coolant inside the machine. I recommend following this guide if you plan on restoring it.

I don't have a 68k yet but I'm looking. Ideally I'd like to find a Plus or Classic II like I had when I was a kid.

Before you know it, you'll have so many that you can't even make it to your bed to sleep. (Tilts head and looks at own floor :p )
My family and friends absolutely hate my mac collection hobby. When my desk and chair isn't occupied with them, my bed is, floor always is, car is serving as computer space too.

I really like my ibook G4, it was from AlphineRaven and serves as my classic game machine, with games such as aoeII, fallout 2, quake, doom and soon, baldour's gate. I also have an iMac G3 and enjoy using it, cant wait to set it up once I fix the random screen zapping noises. Also had a Plus and currently have a Classic II, I like the Plus better but the II is easier to use as it comes built-in with support for HD floppies, has a HDD and accepts more common ADB peripherals, didnt have the stuff to interface with the Plus at the time but regret selling it 100%.
