LaserWriter IIg

CelGen

68000
Does anyone have the more technical documentation on the print engine? The logic board is ridiculous.

I mean, I understand that it's doing PostScript and PCL image processing locally, plus it needs the SCSI chip for the external font drive, the Sonic chipset for the ethernet interface and the SCC for the serial port but the specs otherwise remind me of the LCIII. It's rocking a 25mhz 68030, it can do up to 32mb ram, there appears to be some form of a PDS slot and it even has a location to install a 68882. What on earth would it even NEED that for??

Like...wow.

Postscript would go a lot faster if it has the '882-FPU in the LaserWriter IIg. Along with 32megs of RAM, I forget the specs - 10PPM? Well, it would be a lot faster.

The printer itself is a Canon SX, same as used in the HP LaserJet II and III Series and runs at 8ppm tops. Postscript requires a lot of horsepower to process pages, particularly if you want 600dpi output. The Xante Accel-a-writer II upgrade board is just as complex and runs an AMD RISC CPU.
