KanjiTalk on 7.5?

I have a Japanese game that needs KanjiTalk.

What is KanjiTalk exactly? A whole replacement version of Mac OS or just some components?

Do I have to replace my existing Mac OS 7.5 install? Can I swap it out on demand, or is it one or the other?

I already have Japanese support in Mac OS 9 (via Language Kits + Osaka Font + Language Register) but I'm interested in doing it on Mac OS 7.5.

I would recommend you install the Japanese version of Mac OS 7.5. It can be found in "Mac OS Anthology"

I have a Quadra with both on it (Mac OS 7 and KanjiTalk 7—as far as I know, the Japanese OS was not referred to as Mac OS prior to OS 8). As I recall, I was able to switch between the two by dragging the Finder+System out of and back into the System Folder I wanted to bless, then rebooting. They don’t conflict, because one lives in System Folder and the other in システムフォルダー. An application like System Picker could probably manage this for you.

In my case, KanjiTalk was originally on the system. I used System 7 disk images to install to a second partition, consolidated the systems on the first partition, then blessed as above. It might be safe to install KanjiTalk onto a partition which already has Mac OS, if you only have one partition, but I already had the second handy.

As for whether KanjiTalk is a “whole replacement version” or just “some components”: it’s clearly Mac OS in Japanese, but I don’t think there are components you could just pull out of one and put in the other.
