Just out of curiosity...

I know that this is a question that seems a waste of internet KB, but I've always been wondering...do all iMac G3's sound the same? I mean, my Latin teacher has 5 vintage computers in her classroom, ranging from a Macintosh SE to an eMac. And one of them is an iMac G3. I've been right up there next to it, but her iMac doesn't quite have the high-frequency sound that mine emits. Her room is never truly quiet, so it's possible that I'm hearing it wrong. But is it possible that the sounds really are different and if so, is there a problem with one of the iMacs?

One of my iMacs is silent when switched off the other I have to unplug the noise is so high.

High pitched whines and whistles from CRTs are caused by loose windings in coils being oscillated back and forth by the oscillating magnetic fields. It's not disastrous. It can stay like that for years, or it can be a sign that something's on the way out. If it starts up where it was previousy absent, or changes in pitch or intensity that would be the time to take notice.

my Beige G3 AIO does that untill the CRT warms up. actually both of my AIOs do that at first. give it a few minutes then the whine will stop. some times it goes on for up to 5 minutes then it stops and starts in like a beeping fashion (depending on how cold it is) but goes away. the screen once turned on is clear but once warmed up gets blurry at the edges but clear in the middle.

i have a external monitor that only shows blue when first turned on then the other colors start flashing back (like you took a hit of acid) untill its warmed up. it also makes a crack noize every once in a wile and when it does the screen flickers. i dont use it anymore cause its hardly useable.

My iMac G3 350MHz does that if it stays on for a long time, I used it as my file server for a while. Added a fan to it and it seemed to fix it. I actually just replaced the HD power cables with a 3 plug one and just wired a fan to the prongs i thought would give power, sure enough, I had a fan that ran while in sleep mode and when normally on.
