I was trying to find the highest quality that MpegDec can play with minimal stutter and keeping the menu responsive during play on my 270c.(33mhz '03 w/FPU)

Are you using a NuBus Card in the Dock to get Stereo Sound outta your Duo or are you putting up with its crappy mixed L & R 0utput?

That would be crappy mixed L & R output. Though, this is a max de-code test, so actual perceived quality was not the goal.
