The listing clearly stated "untested" and it said no returns, so no. Even if the seller did know, there's no argument that I was buying something that was supposed to be in good condition or working.

It's not the worst I've ever seen... the RTC and CPU seem to have survived. Might even be bodgeable.

Looks like the BBU survived too, that's hard to replace.

I'd be nervous about that RTC.
 
No surprises here, of course it was the original Maxell battery that caused the carnage.

The chassis will be a good experiment case for rust conversion products. Recommendations for things to try welcome.

I tend to use a wire brush in an angle grinder and then zinc primer, or a straight to rust single coat like hammerite...

But rust conversion stuff is interesting - I have some somewhere, but misplaced it in a move.
 
rust converters are decent, but will leave the item blackened

i've used Evaporust on battery damaged SE/30 metals.
the thing is, it will strip the top layer off the metal. you need to spray it with a clear coat or zinc primer to prevent it from oxidizing.
