Internet Explorer 5.5 for MacOS 9

Browsing around, I stumbled across: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5b1 (5501) for MacOS 9!

Even if it was a beta-version I was really wondering about this. While my 5.0 version is from 22. March 2000, the latest update to version 5.1.7 is from juli 2003. But this beta I got is from first of Juli 2000!

Did anyone of you know about this. As we got Opera 6, Netscape 7, Mozilla, and later Wamcom, it would´nt heave been a real advantage back than. And now we got Classilla and iCab - so it´s mainly for curiosity ;)

Is it any different to 5.2? 5.2 came out sometime around 2001, so I'd imagine it would be more recent - I'd imagine that they were probably going to call 5.2 5.5 originally, but decided on 5.2 for whatever reason.

There was a 5.2? I only know about the 5.1.7 for MacOS 9.

And yes it´s different. Faster, more modern look, seems to heave some advantages and can render some pages 5.0 cannot.

I found that IE 5.5 beta somewhere too (I forget where). It is really more like IE 5.1 I believe.

I actually remember using IE 5.0 beta for Mac. I don't remember how I came across it.

I remember it went up to 5.2.3 for OS X, due to an Apple OS X update breaking the font rendering in 5.2.2 which was the latest version for years before that.

I guess they never went to 5.5 to avoid confusion with the Windows version of IE?
