Internal HD problem.

Can anyone help with this problem I'm having?

I received an SE last week and it has a 50MB Quantum internal HD. I immediately copied over all of the software that was on it to an external just in case.

So I ran the SE with the internal fine for several days.

I let it sit for a few days and tonight it won't boot off that internal drive.

SCSI probe sees it at location 0, Norton utilities sees it but I can't mount it. I can't format it if I can mount it.

Any ideas?

Thank.

Paul

I'm getting these error codes.

SCSI error #5

Norton Disk Doctor error number 275

I found a document that says if I get a blinking drive light every second the HD is okay but the drive heads are not moving.

It also said to shake the drive vigorously and reinstall and use a hair dryer. I tried all this to no avail and the drive spins but no activity.

So, can anyone tell me what those codes listed above mean?

Thanks.

My best guess is you got lucky. I heard freezing it for an hour then trying to use it can work also. Better men then me here may have better advice. These old scsi drives die quick these days .

LOL! Freezing it? I suppose that would work. The metal plates would contract and lose whatever adhesion there might be between the plates or the heads or the spindle drive? Worth a try. I love these types of unconventional ideas.

Yes, it's too bad they stop working. Does anyone make a new drive? I mean newly manufactured as in today or is this all we have to work with? SCSI's till they're all frozen...

:b&w:

I sell a replacement hard drive solution for vintage macs.

I have these newer server scsi hard drives, you can buy just the hard drive for $20

or for $40 you get everything you need Hard Drive/Terminator/Proper 50 pin SCSI adaptor.

the $40 solution is drop in and ready to use.

and they are super fast / small /quiet.

Anyone can PM me for details, I can USPS Priority 2-Day ship out right now, /w payment in paypal.

I see, I'm going to disassemble it and see what I can see. It's too bad it went south so fast. Good thing I saved all the files on it.

In your case, the rubber is on the magnet screw posts. Right hand side. You will have to CAREFULLY remove magnet to gain access. Use a spudger tool or some kind of blade tool and remove all that gooey rubber, and find a replacement. A cassette deck idler pinch roller would work, or old printer rollers work too.

If careful and a pretty close to dust-free as possible environment, replacing this rubber should bring the drive back into full operation.
