Image viewers for System 7?

Ugh, I hate asking this here but I can't find it on the web... What are some good image viewers for Systems 6 and 7? Mainly for GIF and bitmaps, but other formats are good...

Not only does jade work with system 7, it's probably the best classic os slideshow/viewer out there. Give it a try and see if you like it.

Other options include jpegview (mentioned by bluekatt; system 7), and gifconverter (works with system 6). One of those should work with your os/mac combo.

The Mac is a Classic with 4mb of RAM, so I'm looking for something light and B&W. I use the GIMP to scale and convert images I want to view, I just need something to view them with.

DeskPaint! It's a DA and I know it came with a book called "Cool Mac Clip Art Plus" by Tony Reveneaux. The book was published by Hayden, the same guys who put out the games book I talked about not long ago here. (It also has some clip art on the disk). It's monochrome although I think you could buy a colour version as well. I believe it is commercial software, so you're on your own finding a copy of it. It does MacPaint, PICT, and TIFF. (There's also a DeskDraw, which is like pocket MacDraw, but I don't have it and haven't tried it...just read about it).

If the files are MacPaint and you have a copy of WetPaint, use ArtRoundUp. It's read-only but is very good. It came with any copy of WetPaint. Use Version 2.7 for best results with System 7 (though 2.5 also works). Dubl-Click sold this until they went out as a seperate program.

You can also find a copy of Mac Secrets, which contains Color It. It's bundled like DeskPaint is. It can read a lot of formats and you'll want the older version for a Classic (get the 2nd edition of Secrets).

Don't forget that if you're using something other than what one of these programs can read you can use the shareware utility GraphicConverter for OS 9 or X to convert them to a different format.

A Mac Classic? You could've said so in the first place. :) Jade won't help you there, AFAIK.

You only mentioned gifs and bitmaps specifically, but if you also wish to view jpegs, be aware that viewing them on a monochrome compact can sometimes provoke "out of memory" errors. In those cases, convert to gif first, then display. For this purpose, get jpeg convert, then view the result with gifconverter (or gifwatcher). I used to use those apps on my Plus, and I remember thinking that gifconverter did a fine job of halftoning for display on a non-greyscale monochrome mac.

Got GIFWatcher DA, seems to work well. Like I said, I convert the images to b&w and scale to an appropriate resolution beforehand.

In the case of a JPEG, I'll just convert it on a newer Mac using Photoshop Elements in most cases. That way if I want to dither it I can play with the contrast and brightness to get the best result. The same goes for bitmaps, GIFs, etc.

Is GIFWatcher public domain? I've never heard of it except for maybe in passing.

I found a copy for free download somewhere or other, I'm not sure of the legality. Like I said, I'm using the GIMP on Ubuntu to play with images I want to put on it.
