IIsi's, IIcx, LC, LCIII, monitors etc...

A few weeks ago I managed to get (for FREE): a IIsi system in good condition with a monitor that supposedly worked when I got it, but when I got it home it no longer worked

Earlier this week I picked up:

LC (okay condition)

LCIII (good condition)

IIcx (in bad shape)

IIsi (good condition)

2 12" Colour RGB monitors

14"(?) Apple monitor of some kind (I didn't actually check come to think of it...it has speakers built-in)

2 keyboards

mouse

network card

System 7.? install disk

OS9 disk (copy)

VGA monitor adapter

SCSI HD

..and the power cords.

The LC's have network cards in them if I remember correctly and the IIcx has some big video card in it of some kind. Not bad for $15!

One downside (for me) was that they came from a person who smokes, so they all have a really smokey smell to them. As a start, I washed the covers of all the computers, and will clean the motherboards and all the rest as time permits. The IIcx is in the worst shape; I don't know if it's recoverable since some of the caps have badly leaked and corroded. But I'll try washing the motherboard and see how it looks.

I'll be trying out the de-yellowing procedure on some of these as soon as we get some sunny (and slightly warmer) weather here. I have the ingredients, just need the UV!

Anyone who doubts the usefulness of these old computers (I know I don't have to worry about that here) has never seen a 3 year old use System 6, or 7 quite comfortably! My 3 year old daughter finds her way around System 6 & 7 pretty good. I think it comes from the Mac's good user interface design; the menus are consistently in the same place, the interface is very streamlined, etc. The elegance of Mac OS really shines when you find that someone who can't even read yet can find their way around!

Now I just have to figure out where to put all this stuff...

The 12" Colour RGB monitors should work well with the IIsi built-in video, but you will be limited to low resolution.

The VGA adapter will be handy for the IIcx and the LC family models in conjunction with a generic monitor. A report on the video card is welcome.

The 14" monitor may be a bit of a horror. AudioVision 14" monitor with HDI-45 connector? It is a bit of a rarity, but only because so few bought one.

hmmm..good to know. Thanks for mentioning that. I have never heard of a HDI-45 connector. Although, I found a picture of the monitor that you mentioned and it's not that particular one. The one I have has the speakers on the sides of the screen (rather than below it). I'm gonna check through the wikipedia list and see if it can find it. (I'll check tonight when I get home for sure.)

I'll post some info on the video card later this evening

Well it turns out the monitor is a 15AV as seen here. As for the video card, it's only labelled as "High Resolution Display Video Card". It's in rather bad shape. There's 2 capacitors missing from the board, of unknown values. It's not one of the portrait cards; there's one of those in the IIci that I have, it has the strange connector on it, this one doesn't.

A 'strange connector' on a video card in a IIcx or IIci that was used with a Portrait Display (640x870) sounds very much like a (DB-)13W3 connector. This style of connector was common amongst Sun, SG and IBM workstations.

There are 13W3M/DB-15F adapter/converter cables so that the (Apple) Workstation Portrait card can drive a conventional Apple display rather than or in replacement for the Portrait Display.

Interesting! Yes, looking at a picture of the 13W3 online now, that is the connector on the card. Hmmm..I believe that opens up the door to running a dual monitor setup on the IIci 8-)
