IDE adapter

I've not head of anyone that's actually tried it (SCSI -> IDE adaptor -> IDE-CF adaptor) but it's something I've been pondering myself. The problem is of course that SCSI->IDE adaptors are a bit on the expensive side, so I haven't bought one yet.
But the theory is sound: if the SCSI->IDE adaptor really works with IDE HDs there's really nothing to stop it from working with an IDE->CF adaptor.

This is really something that is in the works generally at the moment. Someone has managed to get a PowerBook 150 working with a CF card instead of a hard drive (link) but the 150 uses an IDE interface as standard. Other folks have also done this with PPC PowerBooks like the 1400.
It wouldn't be impossible to do this using paws' suggested configuration so if you have the means then you could be the first to get a CF card working in a compact. Go for it!

Another slightly more obscure option which I intend to investigate is SCSI-PCMCIA and a PCMCIA-CF sleeve. I have a driverless SCSI-PCMCIA box here that I picked up from ebay.us with the help of someone here. Just haven't got around to testing it.

And although it's not mentioned in that Japanese article, the author seems to have purchased his CF adapter from Manabu Sakai of ARTMIX Japan. For I haven't seen that exact same hardware sold elsewhere.
Here's an article about a fellow who put a CF card in a Powerbook 150. Apparently the PB150 has a built-in IDE bus, but he still ran into problems. The amazing thing is the fellow had the software savvy and resources to solve the problem. With his skills there are a lot of cool hacks we might do...

In his case the CF would not work with his Powerbook because it reported back the wrong type of ID. However, from the description, it sounds like this issue may be specific to the PB150 and any machine with ROMs using the same or related IDE driver firmware.

trag, on the subject of "hacks", I tend to think of Applfritter as the site for exploring "Macinstein" constructs and tend to post accordingly. I tend to view this site as more of a preservation of the original technology and upgrading or integrating it with current technological advances which do not cause irreparable damage. And this is exactly the kind of thing which will only enhance these old compacts, not necessarily impress upon them something they were never designed to accommodate. Thanks for the link.

It sure would be nice to put a CF card adapter in my PowerBook 150 with a dremmeled out slot. I could just pop it out, stick it in a USB CF adapter and put a large file on it. Done in 2-3 minutes with shutting down and starting up again. Easy backup, quick, quiet, and if the card dies I stick in a new one. Sigh, If only I could do it with just by replacing the hard drive with one of these. I have taken one apart before and I might just be able to replace a hard drive, but re-connecting the little cable at the back is hard even with small fingers.
I have just paid for two SD/IDE adapters from this bloke. I have previously found his external 2.5-in FireWire and USB (USB-powered also) drive enclosures to be little lifesavers and entirely reliable.
I have also a SCSI/IDE adapter card that was attached to an HDD in a PB 5x0 when I received it. I have not (in a couple of desultory attempts) got board and new IDE drive to play together yet, but ... The maker of the card is not easily discernible, but it is a dead-ringer for the upper card here. I may have to experiment with DIP switches 0-2.
