IBM RS/6000 7044 44P-170!

I have a friend who has a Beige version of that RS/6000 workstation, I think it's a 300MHz too.

I have a 7046 B50 2U server here, and while the hardware it pretty awesome (604e/375, 512MB RAM, 2x 9GB, and built like Fort Knox), I've never been a fan of IBM's approach to software. I used AIX 4.3 and 5L on it and really in both cases found them very icky.

I also have a 44p-170, please let me know if you figure out how to put the bloody side back on. It keeps falling off on mine.

Hopefully they send the hard drive bracket with yours. I did not get one with mine so I just stuck in the second 5.25" bay.

They sent me the bracket and two sets of screws with it. Its a very nice machine, just takes forever to start up, but at least the IBM startup chime is pretty cool (yes, it has one). My POWER GXT3000P video card comes tomorrow, and hopefully my AIX 5.2/5.3 media. (I'm using 5.1 right now)

And people wonder why IBM techs get through so much coffee in a day..?

It's very nice, my RS/6000 (which is a cluster server that originally came in a rack of 12 and was intended for headless operation in a remote server room) still has the built-in sound board and speaker. I have this bizarre vision of an IBM technician working on a rack of servers using one of the redundant spare units as an MP3 player :) . Oddly also my B50 has a framebuffer card in it (although it's not really very good - I could only muster 256 colours at 1280x1024 in AIX/CDE).

The startup chime isn't as good as the one on my SGI Indy though - the coolest startup chime EVER.

The GXT3000P came today. Its pretty much a beast, as this pic shows:
