I need help with setting up SCSI2SD in my Mac Color Classic

Power shouldn't be an issue on the internal CC bus...although I will admit, I had a very strange thing happen once: I got the thing to work properly once only by having the USB power attached to it while on the bus, and then formatting it. Then it no longer needed the power...makes no sense!

Interesting... maybe I should try it, but I have no idea how I'm going to be able to put a micro USB cable inside since there's very little space in the CC.

Just leave the back off while you are working on it. I almost never close the machine up until I know everything is working on it anyway.

No success, but I got some interesting results:

Got Arbitration error (3 times in a row) and the Lido recognized the volume, but I wasn't able to format it.IMG_0232.JPGIMG_0233.JPG

Yes, I had very similar errors as well. I knew that I had seen something similar. Here is my old Classic thread:

Dig through and see the posts regarding the extra power, etc, to get it set. I also started up with the SD card out, then inserted after on and then used Lido...and it somehow worked. I can't explain what sort of voodoo made it go...but now it works fine.

Still no success. :sadmac:

  • Apple System 7.5 disk tools diskette.
  • Yeah, it doesn't boot, I need to boot from diskette.
  • Indeed, the only other Mac I have is Mac Plus, which doesn't have internal SCSI bus.
  • not really, but I don't think the power is the problem because Lido recognizes the drive at SCSI 0 but is unable to read drive capacity.
  • it has old capacitors that I'm probably going to replace but it's working fine for its age.

Well, the Mac performs as usual so I doubt that any other component died, and yes I started this thread because the hard drive died, but that's what happens with nearly 30 year old SCSI hard disks (especially the Quantum ones), but dead hard disks aren't important since I need help with the replacement of that disk.
You really have tried everything.  This is a shot in the dark, but I noticed under your SCSI2SD settings that you'd updated the vender and product id, perhaps there are hard coded sizing values for that drive in Lido that is causing the error, try updating your SCSI2SD back to the default vendor setting of:  codesrc and product ID of SCSI2SD.... or any other junk values that don't represent a real drive.   As you've read with Lido and the patched Apple app you don't need to spoof an approved make and model.

Although I appreciate that the capacitors are probably not the cause in this instance, please get it recapped ASAP. The Color Classic is one of the worst for getting damaged by capacitor leakage.

Have you updated the SCSI2SD to the latest firmware? (4.8.03)

I'm just trying to rule everything out.
Yeah, I have the latest firmware, the first time I tried to configure SCSI2SD, the SCSI2SD utility gave me an error: "save failed" and after updating the firmware it worked.

It is a priority, true enough, as far as I can predict it should be done next week, since my friend knows a guy who does this kind of computer repairs but the guy haven't responded yet.

Let me know if you'd like me to send you a pre-formatted SD card, with a Color Classic system pre-installed.
It's a nice gesture, I appreciate it :) , but I don't think it'll be possible since you live in Australia and I live in Slovakia, so the shipping rates might be expensive.

I tried this and still no success, Arbitration failed...

FWIW, I ALWAYS got the arbitration failure message until I left the cover off of my IIsi and plugged the installed SCSI2SD Board into my IMac with the USB Cable.  The Molex connector had to be in and hooked up, the USB cable had to be hooked up.  Once I discovered that quirk, Lido lit up like a Christmas tree.  The unable to read disk size message happened when I was missing a space in the field where you put the ST225N.  You absolutely MUST have 10 leading spaces.  I swore I checked and re-checked, but after much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I re-launched scsi2sd-util and re-counted.  Sure enough, I only had 9 leading spaces.

The cost of the card plus postage would be about €15. I'm not sure if that's worth it.

As of today, CC's logic board is going to be repaired, but the guy who's gonna repair it has a busy schedule, so as far as I can tell I'll get the board back sometime between 23. December and 29. December.

It's really not that hard to

dd if=/dev/rdisk1 bs=256k | gzip -9 > card.dd.gz

then send the file over the Internet :)

So you think it may be a problem with the CC after all?   With everything you've tried I'm not sure what else it could be at this point.
