I need help with setting up SCSI2SD in my Mac Color Classic

I need help with creating HFS volume on the SD card.

I bought SCSI2SD to replace dead quantum hard disk in my Mac Color Classic. I used this guide to set up SCSI2SD, but I wasn't able to follow it to the end because I have Windows, but I managed to put Lido on a diskette and when I ran the program on the Mac it displayed error saying: "unable to determine size of the volume" (or something along those lines).

My setup is SCSI2SD v5 and 16GB micro SD card, you can see my configuration in the attached files.

One thing: if it is the only drive internally (which is what I would think), then it should have termination enabled. Not sure if you set this on hardware or not if it was only a v5. Otherwise, it so far looks ok...but I am by no means an expert here.

yup, it's the only internal drive and about the termination; the termination resistors are in place, so I have no idea what went wrong...

 
If you have the capabilities, getting a patched (meaning modified) version of Apple HD SC Setup can also possibly help you. See if that will format it. Another question is what is on the card already, is there any sort of file system?

Since I have Windows I can't work with Mac file types (even though I bought iBook G4 for compatibility, it haven't arrived yet, slovak postal service is very slow). The SD card is formatted to NTFS (when I bought it, there was probably FAT32), maybe I should format it to FAT32...

Neither will work. What you should do is remove ALL formatting and literally create a blank card with no file system.

 
Ok, how do I do that? NVM, I erased the card trough Windows Disk Management.

Are you able to post a photo of the exact message you're getting from Lido? I've never known it to have any issues formatting a SCSI2SD volume. What version of Lido is it? You shouldn't even need to change the vendor or product ID of the SCSI2SD with Lido.

Can yo provide a bit more detail?   Did you use DD or BalenaEtcher to write one of my images to your card?

Did you update your SCSI2SD settings to match those I describe in my entry?

Have you done a full format of your card (not a quick format) to see if there were any issues with the card itself?

I used Lido 7.5.6, here are the error messages in order as they appeared (last one appeared two times in a row).

I used DD since I have Ubuntu installed alongside Windows, yes I've configured SCSI2SD as you described in your entry and yes I've fully formatted the card.

 
I'll get it together for you. I've had varying success with one program vs the other. I think every single SCSI2SD I've dealt with has had different issues to get them to work.

 
A couple more questions:

  • What are you booting with now?  A floppy disk?  I also have floppy disk images on my site you can try http://www.savagetaylor.com/2017/12/28/setting-up-your-vintage-classic-68k-macintosh-using-a-floppy-drive/
  • I'm assuming that after using my drive image as device 0, your CC didn't boot?
  • I'm assuming that you don't have another mac to test with?
  • Have you tried providing power to the SCSI2SD using the USB connection instead of the CC's power connector?
  • Is it possible that a capacitor has gone on your CC?   My CC is currently shelved because I started having capacitor issues and haven't had a chance to get it re-capped. 

It would be good to confirm that they problem isn't with your CC itself.  You said you started this because your hard drive died, perhaps something else on the CC board failed at the same time.

  • Apple System 7.5 disk tools diskette.
  • Yeah, it doesn't boot, I need to boot from diskette.
  • Indeed, the only other Mac I have is Mac Plus, which doesn't have internal SCSI bus.
  • not really, but I don't think the power is the problem because Lido recognizes the drive at SCSI 0 but is unable to read drive capacity.
  • it has old capacitors that I'm probably going to replace but it's working fine for its age.

Well, the Mac performs as usual so I doubt that any other component died, and yes I started this thread because the hard drive died, but that's what happens with nearly 30 year old SCSI hard disks (especially the Quantum ones), but dead hard disks aren't important since I need help with the replacement of that disk.
