Help ! My SE/30's battery exploded ! And so did C12 an Y1...

Hi everybody,

my SE/30's battery exploded, and so did C12 (capacitor) and Y1 (I think a transistor).

I've got a replacement for C12, but not for Y1.

My question : with what could I replace Y1 ?

I don't know the value.

Many thanks !

Greetings, SEthirty:

Y1 is actually a crystal, much similar to Y2, which is an oscillating crystal. Y1 traces to C44 and C45, which are tied to chassis ground, underneath the logic board. I, too, am unsure what the value of Y1 is. If anyone knows, feel free to answer. Once the value is found, then I would recommend going to http://www.mouser.com for the part.

Yeah, it's the black thingy above C12 and right from the battery.

Y1 itself didn't explode, but some acid from the exploded battery bited into the legs, and so the part came apart from the logicboard.

considering the proximity to the clock I would guess its 32.768 KHz (pretty much the standard for rtc's), though I would want confirmation before committing to that

IIRC, the Mac SE and SE/30 shared the same exact RTC chip. If that's true, you should be able to swap it out with a good replacement. I'll be home in a little while to verify this. If the numbers match, I will be glad to just give you one off of my dead SE logic board. I saved it in order to salvage parts from.

SEthirty,

Boy, am I lucky or what? I did hang on to an RTC chip from my dead SE logic board. Not only that, but I also saved a replacement Y1 crystal oscillator. The RTC has the following information printed on top:

821V A <--------(date code and revision code)

M637KR <--------(chip name and type code)

3440042B <--------(Apple's part number)

The Y1 I have contains the same information as shown in the pictures posted by applefreak, but mine says "F1 Japan". I don't know how critical this label is, but a crystal's a crystal, right?

Shipping overseas shouldn't be a problem for me. I've got one client (68kmla member) that I've been replacing capacitors on his SE/30 board for a while, and he lives in Germany. The only issue I've run into is during delivery. Each country has their own Customs officer(s) to look out for anything suspicious. One package that I sent back to my client ended up being held in customs for almost 34 days, before being released and sent back to the owner. Don't ask me why it took that long, since I don't know, either.

If you're interested, I'll be glad to send both to you. Just contact me in a private message (PM) through this site so we can work out the details.

Cheers!

I for one would absolutely love to see a crisp closeup photo of these "exploded" components.

Once you replace everything, be sure to test all PCB traces with a DMM that has Continuity Check. You want to make sure all the visible traces in the area of the "explosion" are still good.

Especially check any traces BENEATH THE BATTERY HOLDER. You may have to unsolder it. Chances are that it is corroded away from the battery anyway, so you may not choose to put it back in. I had one heck of a bugger with a IIci, it took me absolutely forever to find that spot and it was barely visible.

After checking all traces, I can concluce that the board is dead.

The Acid probably affected the traces inside the board, which is almost impossible to fix, so I'm looking for a new board.

I have had a hard time finding replacement motherboards, and instead bought another SE/30 off ebay.

It needs new caps badly, bad audio and has a strong eerie smell coming from it.

But you may have to purchase another computer.

The replacement computer will be gutted (case is worse than my original, and has burn-in) with the analogue board and PSU will also be shelved. But if anybody wants a case, I can offload that for a MacQuarium project.
