A lot of older Apple boxes were huge. I remember the box that our LCIII came in being somewhere around that size. And the box that my 1400 came in (which I still have) is also quite big for a laptop box - much bigger than the box my MacBook came in.
The 800K floppy drive also comes in a pretty big box, at least compared to the drive itself. Nothing like the eco-friendly packing they use nowadays (iWork, anyone?)
Indeed - the box that my MacBook came in isn't that much bigger than the MacBook itself. Still does the job though - the local hick who just happens to be our contractor for TNT delivered my MacBook on the back of his truck, which was loaded up with all kinds of farm machinery. There was a big hole in the brown outer carton, but thankfully, the inner white box, and the MacBook itself, was completely fine.
Still, I'm amazed at how little packaging they give you these days - my 1400 came with two seperate boxes that were packed in the same box as the 1400 , that held accessories (the power adaptor, floppy drive, manual, CDs, etc), and I remember the LCIII coming with an "Accessories kit" about the same size.
