Got a Macintosh! Now What?

I don’t care what that book tried to teach me in 1991, I am still putting two spaces after a sentence. See? And again!

Ohhhh that’s funny …. The forum software automatically removes the second space when you save your post … ouch
I don't see, because modern computers automatically delete your second space :p

If you need to open your SE, this is excellent and priced pretty reasonably:
ETA: in fact, I really have to encourage you to open up your computer and remove the battery if you're not positive it's already out. They can cause a really astonishing amount of damage. Search the forum and you'll see pictures that will keep you up at night.

Once you get your ImageWriter, try PrintShop for that retro printing goodness.
Thanks.

I like having extra spaces for my old Macs! Where am I supposed to put them if modern computers keep deleting my space?

Interesting...shows what I missed out on!
It was a typewriter thing, that doesn't apply to typesetting or computers, but it was so engrained that computers had to learn to delete the second space because it was easier than retraining the population šŸ˜†

What's equally fascinating is we still use the QWERTY keyboard layout which was deliberately engineered to limit the top end of human typing speed.

Indeed. I find I can fly though. In fact, I’ve never typed ā€œproperly.ā€ I taught myself how to starting when I was five. When I got to typing class when I was probably twelve or thirteen, I was absolutely frustrated when they tried to make me type ā€œproperly.ā€ I refused, and still don’t type ā€œproperlyā€ today.

I'll go to my grave putting two spaces after periods. I've given a half hearted attempt at the one space thing, it just feels wrong.

Same here.

According to this entry in Wikipedia, however, one space has been standard since about 1950 (???)

I learned to type using two spaces as a child in the UK in the 1970’s. As a teen in the US in the 1980’s, I was taught two spaces for the three years I took typing. As far as I’m concerned, it has always been two spaces, and always will be, Wikipedia and iPhone autocorrect be damned.

As an early millennial in the US, I was taught two spaces and still use them.

I learned proper typing on a IIe in the fourth grade, with a piece of construction paper taped to it, covering my hands.
