Classic typing courses taught to always put two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence.
It was a typewriter thing, that doesn't apply to typesetting or computers, but it was so engrained that computers had to learn to delete the second space because it was easier than retraining the population
That's how I was taught by my mother who was a professional secretary trained in the 60's.
What's equally fascinating is we still use the QWERTY keyboard layout which was deliberately engineered to limit the top end of human typing speed.
Indeed. I find I can fly though. In fact, Iāve never typed āproperly.ā I taught myself how to starting when I was five. When I got to typing class when I was probably twelve or thirteen, I was absolutely frustrated when they tried to make me type āproperly.ā I refused, and still donāt type āproperlyā today.

According to this entry in Wikipedia, however, one space has been standard since about 1950 (???)
I learned to type using two spaces as a child in the UK in the 1970ās. As a teen in the US in the 1980ās, I was taught two spaces for the three years I took typing. As far as Iām concerned, it has always been two spaces, and always will be, Wikipedia and iPhone autocorrect be damned.
Dang. I guess that's why I still find typewriting comfortable.
It is indelicate to talk about periods (or fanny packs, for that matter) in polite conversation.
