Got a IIsi for restoration

I saved a IIsi from the landfill the other and the unit doesn't look too bad. It was stored in a self storage facility for the last 20 years (at least). This IIsi 5/80 comes with Nubus FPU adapter, a pack of original software (Claris Works in original box), manuals, keyboard, mouse and a 14" Apple RGB Display.

Upon a first inspection, the mainboard doesn't seem to be in a bad shape. No battery bombed and the caps also don't look too bad (no obvious cap goo). The motherboard PSU connector however looks a bit suspicious (darkened pins) but when opening the PSU it also doesn't look too bad.

What do you think? Should I give it a try or first disassemble the unit and clean the mainboard with an ISO bath? I am not so familiar with doing board level repairs and the IIsi would be my first attempt.

I can see lots of cap goo - look closer. C31 has leaked everywhere.




Still, should be fixable for sure, and it's a good score. You may have to take some of the ICs off to clean well under them.

There's no point trying to power this on without recapping it first.

Thanks @joshc I will take out the board the other day and inspect it more thoroughly. As said, I have little experience with this kind of stuff.

I just bought a iisi project board from ebay.. my god, cap goo was horrendous.. took along time to get down to actual pads and prep them for fresh solder. I had to check traces / vias to make sure there was good connections. Recapped now ready to power on

Here is a prime example of that area. I just pulled off two ic chips tonight due to cap leakage in that exact area.. recapping doesnt fix everything unfortunately. Hope on your case it does.. take your time. Isopropyl bath will help, but better to pull off old caps first
