G5 Case Interchangeability

Hi,

As I mentioned in my "latest..." thread, I got a G5 with a mangled foot.

So I got a new case for it, but what if it doesn't work?

I guess I'd like to know if all G5s used the same design for mountings and stuff internally, or if later ones (like the early or late '05 models) were different somehow.

The later models (dual core, PCI-E) use a different power layout, and the connector for the front panel is different too.

I'd try your luck first trying to bend out the handle yourself, using something like a steel bar for leverage, rubber mallet. You'll be there all day transferring everything over to a new case, and the risers that hold onto the CPU, motherboard are quite fragile and tend to snap off while you're tearing it down.

Well, I'll take my chances if it turns out to not be a PCIe model case.

It's a good excuse to tear down a G5 anyway, since I've never done it before (and it could probably use a good cleaning and some new thermal paste).

I tried bending the foot out a bit, but it just looks kind of ugly to me. If I could somehow just replace the foot (like one can on B&W G3s and G$s), that would be ideal. However, I haven't seen any evidence that that is possible (without a lot of reworking, and possibly redoing some rivets and stuff I'm guessing).

I don't have anything against them, though. These things happen, and this is one of the few times it's happened to me.

The case is screwed together, so the large case parts can be swapped around if you have the suitable bits.

Oh, so does this mean that I'd only have to somehow get the foot off the bare case and "transplant" it onto the assembled G5?

It seems that I'd have to do a fair amount of dis-assembly anyway just to get to those screws, no? If that's so, I might as well proceed with plan A (assuming the case I got is compatible, of course).

"different port layout" is what I meant to say

It requires a total tear down to get to the outer core of the G5, and you have to bend it a little to slide it out, beware scratching the casing

OK, so then if the new case has a "different port layout", this will be my plan B.
