G4 MDD question..

hello.. i always wanted one of those.. and one year ago i found one. it was working fine.. but every time i closed the computer it did not want to boot up again , i needed to unplug/plug the power cord and then it booted again .. i used it for a while without a problem and still work.. this was a 1.42 ghz dual fw800 .

and now.. i found a dual 1.0 ghz fw400 .. since i like the opportunity to boot into os9 i bought it.. switched the 1.42 ghz module ,maxed the memory, everything seemed fine. the computer seemed to boot fine.. but yesterday the computer have developed the same power symptom.. i am wondering if anyone know what can cause this ? the computer seem good.. normal temperature , no kernel panic etc.. but if i use shutdown under the apple menu it wont boot up again. i also noticed that if i boot into osx and force shutdown by holding the start button i will be able to boot it normally.. this is under Tiger 10.4.11.. it seem strange i wonder if every mdd have this problem or am i just unlucky.. ?

I had the same issue with mine. Never figured it out, since I then got the Macbook I have from ian.finder here on 68kMLA and eventually sold the MDD off to someone on CL, since I have another G4 PowerMac, that being my Digital Audio with 1.2GHz G4 upgrade, which I've owned since 2009. It seemed in my case that it only happened if I didn't use the computer for a couple days or so. If I used it daily, it'd power up no problem.

One thing you probably want to do, if you haven't already, is source a copy of CHUD 3.5.2. Install that. Allows you to enable nap mode, which will quiet the computer down quite a bit. It'll still be loud, but won't be howling at full speed.

Have you seen all the SMD caps on the processor? It's ridiculous, and the 1.42 dual is a lot of heat (in comparison to single). If you put the old processor back in does it still do it? My dual 1.0 doesn't do it (super not used a lot as power supply was dead after warranty and they didn't know about recall) but my single 1.25 will do what you describe if its been used a while, or so.

I may be way off but those caps died on the motherboard on an HP I had(desktop),and since then just about everything I've worked on.

i found something else strange.

After installing chud tools 3.6.2 on the mac.. i enabled nap mode and the power supply fan rev up in idle and rev down when cpu are in use. Anyone else experienced that ? the temps get lower but the up and down noise is annoying :'(

In my case, using the 3.5.2 version under 10.4.11, the fans would rev up to full speed prior to my enabling nap mode. Once I enabled it, the fans would slowly go back down to a normal rpm. When I switched to a single chip, the fan speed remained at a constant lower rpm setting, since nap mode was automatically enabled.

i found that by plugging a adc monitor in the radeon 9000 pro, the mdd boot normally and chud work normally too.. would a dead pram battery cause this :?:
